"Rustica"- Cooking knife
A modern kitchen knife… or a piece of medieval history?
⠀
This is a faithful reconstruction of a knife found at Kidwelly Castle, Wales, dated to around the 12th century. Despite being nearly 900 years old in design, it looks perfectly at home in a modern kitchen.
⠀
No glue or resin holds this knife together- It is fixed using traditional techniques!
The tang is burned through the handle and looped at the end to secure it in place. A pair of birch bark pegs are inserted for extra grip and then finally, a brass ferrule reinforces the transition between blade and handle, giving it strength but also just that little something more.
⠀
A reminder that good design never really goes out of style
